Gender Sexuality Alliances

LGBT Youth Scotland

Have you heard of Gender Sexuality Alliances?

Gender and Sexuality Alliances (GSAs) seek to promote Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) inclusion.  These are pupil-led initiatives within schools across Edinburgh, The Lothians and further afield.  They promote LGBTI inclusive practice through offering to create safe spaces in school for LGBTI pupils and their non-LGBTI allies.

GSAs meet on a quarterly basis to promote peer-to-peer learning in their ambition for full LGBTI inclusion in the life of the school through celebration of LGBTI identities.  This is done through the LGBTI cultural calendar events through the year, visibility in the curriculum and promotional material in public spaces in the school and online.

Eradicating prejudice against LGBTI identities through effectively having an impact on school culture is the overall aim of the GSAs.

LGBT Youth Scotland encourage schools undertaking the LGBT Charter Mark Quality Assurance process of LGBTI inclusive practice to set up and support the pupil-led groups such as GSAs.  This is because it indicates schools are utilising peer leadership to tackle discrimination and create democratic school environments where everyone has an equal opportunity to thrive and be acknowledged.
