SCERTS Programme:
SCERTS is a multi-disciplinary approach to enhance communication and social and emotional abilities of children. The key dimensions are:
Social Communication
Emotional Regulation
Transactional Support
The SCERTS programme is well researched and consistent with CIRCLE. It is used successfully in other UK authorities. It is based on typical development.
It is written by a well-respected team of speech and language therapists and occupational therapists from the US. Later this year, Emily Reuben, one of the Speech Therapists on this team, will present a three day SCERTS course in Edinburgh for key ASL Service staff and NHS colleagues. All learning language and communication, learning and wellbeing and some English as an additional language staff will be involved in SCERTS training on 6-8 December 2017.

Senior Team Mandatory Equalities Training
The programme is, “Inclusive practice: towards Cultural Proficiency”.
The journey to Cultural Proficiency begins within.  This course provides dedicated time and space for school leaders to begin an introspective journey before leading colleagues to value the diverse cultures of their schools.
Participants will have the opportunity to:
Develop a personal understanding of Cultural Proficiency
Examine and reflect on their own cultural values, assumptions and behaviours
Consider how they might become agents of change in their learning communities and lead their establishments to Cultural Proficiency

Please refer to the table below to see the date and time for your school.  As we are offering 4 identical sessions, over two dates,  there is flexibility for you and your senior managers to book onto another date and time, other than the one for your locality, to suit you best.  This will be on a first come, first served basis, as places are limited for each event.    If you have not done so already, please book on through MyHR, using Course Code 2402, indicating which date and time you wish to book.  Thank you to St Augustine’s for agreeing to host the September training dates.  The March training dates will be held at the Faith Mission.

ASL Service training for Senior Management Team members

ASL training day for SMT

Senior Management Team (SMT) staff from schools across the city took part in additional support training on the 6th September at Wester Hailes Education Centre.  This was organised in relation to the City of Edinburgh Council’s strategic priority to support inclusion, in particular for those children on the autistic spectrum.  This training will be repeated 7 March 2017 for all remaining SMT members.  An additional training is being organised for SMT in special sector and language classes/ secondary resource provisions and for all partner provider nursery managers.

We would like to thank all attendees for coming and are looking forward to the next session.

A day in the life of an EAL Teacher

EnquireMany of you may be aware of Enquire, the Scottish advice service for additional support for learning. They are managed by Children in Scotland and funded by the Scottish Government.  On their fantastic website, they have a regular “Day in the Life” feature, where they invite various professionals to share a typical day in their role supporting children and young people with additional support needs and/or educational establishments, parents and carers.

Recently, our very own Sarah Neary shared a day in the life of an EAL teacher.

Please read her story here.
